What Are The Main Parts Of A Research Paper For High School?

Different high schools hold their students to different standards. Even in the same school you might find that students in the advanced classes are expected to be more circumspect in the writing of their papers than everyone else. As such, the rules are not set in stone. With this in mind, here are basic parts any high school-er can take care to include in their writing.

  • The introduction
  • This is the section that gives your teacher his or her first idea of what the rest of the paper will be about. If you start well, the rest of the project is likely to follow or at least to be looked at positively. If you start of badly, the opposite can happen. Your teacher will be convinced deep inside that the rest of the paper will be just as bad and even if it isn’t you may have a hard time turning that perception around.

  • The hypothesis
  • This is the question you are trying to answer. In the sciences, it is expected that you start with an idea and actively seek out every piece of evidence that might disprove it. Only after it has withstood that level of scrutiny is it worthy of being accepted and even so, that acceptance is only until someone else provides a disproving piece of evidence.

  • The research
  • Your paper absolutely must contain evidence that supports your claims. You acquire such evidence by carefully researching the available sources. At the end of this you should have at least satisfied your own objective curiosity on the matter. If your research reveals something different from what you expected, this too needs to be reported.

  • The acknowledgments
  • This is a section where you get to thank the people whose assistance helped make your work possible. This would include your teacher, anyone you interviewed or anyone who allowed you access to secondary sources of information. This is considered good manners.

  • Bonus: The format
  • The format is not exactly a thing to be included. It is more like the ‘way’ that everything should be included. Some teachers prefer one format to another but you need to know what your options are before you get started. Applying formatting after the fact can be a pain.

Now that you know what has to be done, all that’s left is to do it.
